Aussies are reporting failed attempts at getting their hands on a popular new food item, created by a cult doughnut chain and an Australian brand.
Krispy Kreme launched a collaboration with Pistachio Papi – an Australian-owned and Italian-made nut spread – on Tuesday, sending fans into a tail spin with the news.
It quickly sold out in most stores on its first day on shelves, and it seems the same has happened again on Wednesday.
Fans desperate to get their hands on the new doughnut have been sharing their struggles on social media, with TikTok user @thecakeupartist posting a video of her in the drive-through at Krispy Kreme asking for two of the doughnuts.
“We don’t have that one unfortunately, we’ve sold out,” the worker can be heard explaining.
She said she was going to “cry” after being told, but stressed she would try again another day.
Another store resorted to putting a sign on the box at the drive through to say it had sold out of the product.
Mark Abdel, the founder of Pistachio Papi, said he has been inundated with messages about the in-demand product in a series of Instagram Stories – with one store sold out by 8:40am on Wednesday.
Sharing a number of messages from frustrated shoppers, Mr Abdel said it was “ridiculous” that people were unable to get their hands on the sought-after item.
“Mate, Krispy Kreme Sydney airport was so underprepared. They said they got about 100 phone calls and they don’t have any. I was in the line in and about five people came after me came. I’ve just rocked up and there’s nothing there,” one text read.
Another said: “Fountain Gate was so quick.”
One added: “They sold out sooo quickly, by 8am Fawkner were sold out. They said they only get limited stock.”
News.com.au understands that Krispy Kreme bakes fresh daily, with new batches of the limited-edition doughnuts available every day while the collaboration runs.
“We’re absolutely blown away by the love for our new limited-edition Pistachio Overload Doughnut and truly grateful for the support,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.
“Some stores are selling out quickly due to high demand, but we’re working directly with Pistachio Papi and our production team to increase supply while staying true to our ‘made fresh daily’ promise.
“We know how much Aussies want to get their hands on this special treat, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure more fans can share the joy.”
However, fans who have been able to get their hands on the highly sought after item have raved about it.
Ange Eats, a popular food content creator, said it may be the doughnut shop’s best collaboration in years.
“I think this is the best Krispy Kreme collab since the Biscoff launch and it goes to show seeing as the product sold out so quickly,” he told news.com.au.
“I don’t remember a Krispy Kreme doughnut collab selling out like this before. People go on and on about how good the spread is and it’s just a testament to their success really.
“People are going crazy over the spread. It’s just so creamy and smooth. The white choc absolutely compliments the pistachio and it’s up there with Biscoff and Nutella.”
