‘Absurd’: Woolworths checkout photo that has every Aussie raging

A shopper who snapped a photo of three staple items – chicken, milk and a tomato – bought at the supermarket captured nationwide anger.

Households struggling with cost of living as grocery prices rise

A shopper has been left outraged after spending $19 on just three staple items — chicken, milk, and a tomato — at the supermarket.

The shopper took to Reddit to share his shock at spending almost $19 at Woolworths after picking up an $11.90 680-gram pack of chicken thigh fillets, $5.80 for a two-litre bottle of milk and $1.28 for a Truss tomato at a Woolworths in Melbourne on Monday.

Typically, he spends up to $150 a week on groceries for himself and his partner.

The anonymous social media user isn’t the only one shocked by rising grocery prices.

According to the ACCC Supermarket’s Inquiry survey from April 2024, Young Australians and low-income earners spend a quarter of their income on groceries, with more Aussies shopping around for deals and swapping fresh food for frozen.

Parents reported that they were skipping meals so that their children can be properly fed.

Finder revealed that Australians spent $14.18 billion on groceries in December 2023 alone, with prices rising for 78 per cent of products between December 2022 and 2023, according to the Consumer Price Index.

“I just thought it was a bit absurd, looking at the items I got versus the cost,’ the Woolworths customer told Daily Mail Australia.

“I wasn’t looking for the cheapest and most efficient things otherwise I would have done a larger shop.”

A Woolworths spokesperson defended the price of the man’s shop.

“We work hard to provide value to our customers, as well as a variety of options to suit their needs,” the spokesperson said.

“It’s important to note that lactose-free milk is more expensive than regular milk due to the additional processing required to remove the natural lactose.

“The tray of RSPCA Approved chicken fillets contains several servings which could make for a family meal or be enjoyed over a couple of days.”
