Oysters, licorice: 8 foods people only pretend to like
A Reddit thread has been circulating for more than a year getting people talking about the foods no-one could possibly enjoy — like fresh oysters. Have your say.

A 2022 Reddit post has been making the rounds again, with the question posed “What food do you swear people only pretend to like?”.
The thread received a massive 36,720 comments, so people obviously have some big feelings about this.
These are some of delicious.com.au’s picks.
Do you agree or have other foods you think people actually hate? Leave your comments below.
Christmas pudding
Sorry, Nan. Christmas pudding is seriously overrated. There are so many other cakes to choose from. A bunch of dried fruit and citrus peel, in a dense boozy cake that never seems cooked? No thanks. There’s a reason we light it on fire.
Fondant
Another old-timey way of extending a cake’s shelf life that we’ve evolved past. It’s too much. Sugary, chewy, kind of claggy. We’ll pass on this one.
Oysters
This is a polarising one, but it can’t be denied that oysters sit in the ‘love it or hate it’ category. One particular Redditor creatively stated that oysters are just “overpriced sea boogers”. That’s a visual that’s hard to unsee.
Licorice
For many, licorice is a particularly insidious menace. As soon as you think you’re rid of the taste of grass mixed with dirt, the aftertaste rushes up your nose and hangs around in the back of your throat until you brush your newly blackened teeth.
Coconut water
This is specifically for coconut water out of a can. It always has a weird stevia sort of sweetness, and God forbid you try to drink it at room temperature, at which point it turns immediately to bitter vinegar. As one commenter puts it, “It’s what I imagine the water after a pedicure would taste like.” If you’re not drinking it to banish a hangover, what are you even doing?
Whisky
This may upset the Scottish, but honestly, can we stop pretending that fire water is a fun way to get boozed? Even in the movies, the grizzled old men sucking their teeth and grimacing after a wee dram don’t look like they’re having a good time.
Milk
There is something just not quite right about drinking a glass of milk beyond the age of 10. Yes, calcium is important for healthy bones, but eat a piece of cheddar and grow up.
Super spicy food
A bit of spice can absolutely add to a meal, and we love a little kick. But once things get to a certain heat, it’s just painful, and ruins whatever flavour you might actually be able to taste.
“Sauces based on capsaicin extract are just painful spice with an aftertaste of battery acid and not something I’d ever recommend putting on food.”
Well said, u/toddspotters.
