Mum shares Coles grocery bargain haul amid inflation

A mother-of-three who decided to go to her local Coles store on a “whim” was shocked to learn how much meat products had been reduced.

Woolies shopper scores groceries for ‘free’

An Aussie mum revealed her epic meat haul after managing to find a variety of items for a bargain price at her local supermarket.

The pregnant mother-of-three from Sydney took to Facebook to share snaps of her heavily discounted shop, leaving many stunned.

“Went to my local Coles tonight on a whim and scored these bargains,” she wrote in the post. “Six chickens for under a $1 each, Korean BBQ chicken kebabs 80c and scotch fillet for 95c. “Seriously thinking of buying a second chest freezer,” she said.

Hundreds of thrifty shoppers bombarded her post to share tips on what she can do with the meat haul.

“Great find. I’d cook all the chickens, bag and throw in the freezer. Lunches for the next month. Ching ching,” one person wrote.

The mum responded: “Tonight’s dinner was the kebab chicken with mash – potato and pumpkin with mixed veggies – for me and three kids.

“Leftovers will be taken to my partner in hospital and for my lunch tomorrow as well.

“We like to have a meal together every time I’m there and buying hospital food/take away is expensive.”

She said there’s no particular time she goes to do her groceries – and with three kids and her partner in hospital after a leg amputation, she does the shopping when she can.

“That night we’d just seen my partner in hospital and stopped into Coles on the way home,” she told Yahoo 7.

She managed to score a bunch of meat products including six chickens and Korean barbecue breast kebabs from 80 cents each.

“I needed other items but always check the meat and cold sections for reduced-to-clear items. “The bakery section is another favourite, especially for the kids.”

At a time when grocery prices have hiked, experts have advised there are ways to keep your pocket somewhat happy.

“Check prices as we’re seeing temporary spikes in things like lettuce due to the floods,”

Joel Gibson, the campaign director at One Big Switch, told news.com.au.

“Use the unit pricing to compare value and substitute big brands for home brands.

“Shop at more than one supermarket ideally and pick the eyes out of the 50 per cent off specials and cheapest prices.”

Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder, agreed it was definitely possible to save money on groceries.

“Making a few simple swaps can shave a decent amount off your weekly shop,” he said.

“Frozen veggies can be a cheaper alternative to fresh ones and you won’t need to worry about them going to waste.

“Canned foods like beans and tomatoes are a great addition to soups and stews, as are grains like barley and rice. Depending on your supermarket and what you’re buying, it might also be cheaper to buy in bulk and stock up your pantry.”

He also recommended using grocery comparison apps like Frugl to compare the cost of products between supermarkets.

In May, comparison site Finder revealed the average Australian spends $164 per week on groceries for their household, up from $152 in March, while petrol prices have risen by 64 per cent across the country between 2016 and 2022, according to Finder analysis of Consumer Price Index data.
