A Sydney mother of two has shared her disgust after a breakfast order at a local cafe did not look at all like what she had expected.
Grace Jennings-Edquist shared a photo over the weekend of the bizarre alternative for a classic Aussie breakfast staple.
“This artisanal cafe culture has gone TOO FAR,” Ms Jennings-Edquist said.
She thought she had ordered her daughter a simple Vegemite toast but realised her mistake when her child started complaining about the taste.
“Daughter said it tasted ‘yucky’ and like nuts,” she said.
“Turns out the cafe only does ‘homemade Vegemite’ – a vegan concoction involving sesame and soy.”
The vegemite in question was slightly discoloured compared with the traditional product.
“Lucky my baby isn’t allergic. Hard no!!”
Some Twitter users took to the comments to share the mum’s dismay over the fresh take on a breakfast favourite.
“Should be a criminal offence,” wrote one.
“Looks like mould on bread, ewww. Also they should say what it is upfront because, as you pointed out, there’s a little (huge, major, dire) thing called allergies,” said another.
Vegemite is already a vegan breakfast staple, with salt, yeast and malt extract the star ingredients.
“At the very least they shouldn’t call it Vegemite,” a third said.
The Twitter user agreed that calling it homemade vegemite was a risk for people with allergies.
“Once, a cafe offered a “chocolate milkshake” on its menu, which had actually been flavoured with a BS vegan peanut brownie rather than choc syrup. My son had an anaphylactic reaction to it,” she said.
