The woman, based in the UK, then revealed it was, in fact, apricot.
On Macca’s website in Australia, it confirmed that there is a blend of fruit within the sauce, stating the ingredients included “apricot or peach blended with spicy flavours including Worcestershire, vinegar, and mustard”.
Social media users had a mixed reaction to the news, with some revealing they believed it was obvious.
One person commented: “I said mango SO confidently. I had no idea that it was even a fruit.”
“Our favourite sauce and the worst fruit,” another said.
One added: “I would like to know why you would shatter my world view like that. Explain, please. Thank you.”
One, who makes it themselves, claimed to have a completely different recipe.
The social media user said: “I make it from scratch using tomato sauce, pineapple juice and balsamic vinegar. Never used apricot.”
Another said: “It literally tastes like apricot. I mean I knew, but I thought it was obvious.”
The most popular guess for the fruity ingredient among commenters was pineapple.
