As families up and down the country prepared to sit down for their festive dinner, some were left appalled at the state of their supermarket purchase.

Upset shoppers claimed to have made their purchases from one of three main brands, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Lidl.

Many distressed customers took to social media to express their disappointment.

“And the award for ruining Christmas goes to @sainsburys for selling my mum a turkey that’s well and truly off,” one X user wrote.

Another wrote, “Omg they delivered a rotten turkey???”

A mum said, “Thanks @sainsburys, thanks for nothing. Opened my turkey to cook this morning, and it is OFF! Stinks to high heaven. No Christmas dinner for us today.”

Someone else posted, “Well done Sainsbury’s Christmas is officially ruined! I’ve just got the turkey out of the fridge and it’s rotten! It smells so bad I can’t believe you could sell this? #christmasruined.”

The caption was posted alongside pictures of a turkey which appeared ominously dark in some places.

According to the label, the £14.36 ($29) main should have offered enough for seven portions and been safe to eat until December 27.

A spokesperson for the online platform was quick to respond.

Karen replied, “Hi there. Thanks for getting in touch. I’m sorry there’s an issue with your turkey. Can you let me know if this was bought in store or online please? I’ll look into this for you. Thanks, Karen.”

Another shopper posted a plea to the same supermarket brand after their £13.10 ($26) turkey crown had “gone off”.

“@sainsburys thanks for ruining Christmas,” they said. “Bought this turkey crown YESTERDAY from you Sury Basin store in Kingston Upon Thames. Straight home to our fridge. Opening tonight to prep for tomorrow and it has gone off. Did not smell good. Please tell me how you fix this for us.”

Tesco shoppers have also revealed how disaster struck on the day of festive cheer.

One user commented, “Turkey is off! I guess it’s pizza. Hoping to no quibble, full refund Boxing Day.”

A second wrote, “Looks like I’m guessing the cooking time for my @Tesco turkey today as their packs do not have exact weight or cooking time printed on front as normal. Back of pack says refer to front for cooking times … trying to weigh a turkey on small kitchen scales is fun! Merry Christmas!”

Lidl looks to have not made it out unscathed after one buyer described their turkey as “rancid”.

“Just a heads up as I’d hate for anyone open theirs up Christmas morning and there be no shops open selling turkeys I’ve just gone to wash and marinate my turkey ready for Wednesday and it was fully RANCID inside!” they wrote.

“Smells awful and the meat had turned green! Bought fresh from Lidl Woodhouse Lane on Friday, dated December 26 and been stored at the back of my fridge since bought so there’s absolutely no reason for it to be off. And there’s me thinking buying fresh would be better than frozen this year.”

The Sun has approached Lidl and Tesco for comment.
