Exclusive: It was a war between Cola frogs and fruity Unicorns — after a record number of votes, Australia has finally decided which lolly they really want.
The 2019 Allen’s Loll-ection has revealed that Australians love their retro flavours, with Cola frogs beating Unicorns.
Allen’s Corporate Affairs spokeswoman Margaret Stuart told News Corp Australia they had a record number of votes online, with more than 38,000 people registering their preference for the lollies.
Cola Frogs won a stunning 65 per cent of the vote.
It will also be the first time Allen’s Cola flavour will be sold in a bag of its own.
She said the result was “quite a surprise” to those who work for Allen’s in the factory in Broadford, Victoria, and in their office.
“We really thought Unicorns were what people would want but they clearly wanted Cola frogs,” she said.
“It really divided people around our office.”
Ms Stuart attributed the strong support for the Cola frog to it being a “taste and shape” people know.
“The frog shape and the Cola flavour has been around for a long time,” she said.
The Unicorns camein three distinct flavour combinations including apple and blackberry, strawberry and peach, and grapefruit and pineapple.
Their design took six months to develop.
When asked what would happen to the Unicorn shape and flavours, Ms Stuart said they’d be shelved for now.
“But never say never,” she said.
“Lollies come and go, we still have the idea and the recipe so who knows what the future will hold.
“But there’s no doubt, Australians do love their retro flavours and people really like lollies they’ve known for sometime and invested in.”
The Cola frogs will now go into full production and be available in its own bag via Woolworths in February.
