Australians have been left stunned after discovering the unexpected way supermarkets refill empty milk fridges.
Footage has emerged showing a Woolworths employee restocking a refrigerator as shoppers walked by with their trolleys.
But while you might expect to see the staffer sliding bottles of the white beverage onto shelves by opening the door at the front – the video revealed there’s actually a hidden room behind the glass doors.
In the clip, a Woolies employee wearing a thick jacket and gloves can be seen moving large shelves of milk around, revealing a huge refrigerated room behind the milk bottles.
“Please tell me I’m not the only one who thought they fill up the shelves from front by opening the door?” the caption read.
Aussies in the comments were overwhelmingly in agreeance, stating they had “no idea” there was such an intricate system in place for restocking milk.
But Woolworths has preempted interest in the topic, sharing a video that shows interested customers “how milk fridges work”.
Filmed by TikTok famous employee Liam Kirley, he explained there was a sophisticated shelving system for restocking the popular supermarket item, and took viewers inside the secret room.
“It’s pretty impressive, trust me. People may think that we stock the fridges from the front, but we don’t,” he said.
“This is what’s behind the doors of the milk fridge. And when we’re about to stock the fridge, we put milk here [on a shelf] and let it roll down.
“And that’s how we stock the milk fridge.”
Despite Woolworths’ earlier video, many were shocked by the recent clip showing the employees at work restocking from behind the fridge doors.
“This feels illegal to see,” one shared, as another wrote: “I can’t deal with this at 7 in the morning.”
“Geez I didn’t know either I thought it was just shelf,” someone else admitted.
“You learn something new everyday,” mused another.
Others were in “shock” at the sight of the refrigerated room behind the shelves, describing the insights as catching a glimpse “behind the scenes”.
“It makes sense but I’d never even thought about it,” one said.
“Wait so you can just push the shelf back and step in?” another pushed.
As someone else added: “WHAT IN THE ACTUAL?”
Others mocked those who were in “disbelief”, stating it showed they had never worked in retail.
Woolworths isn’t the only supermarket that uses this system, with Coles also having a similar set-up in some of its stores.
The main reason milk is stacked from the back rather than the front is due to the weight of the product.
