It comes as no surprise that the rules around marriage and weddings have loosened up over the years. As marriages become more modern, so too do the traditions, superstitions and taboos that used to rule wedding days. Now, brides can wear whatever colour they choose, partake in whatever ceremony configurations they please, and—if you’re of the celebrity ilk—coordinate as many outfit changes as takes your fancy.

So, of course, why wouldn’t this newfound freedom extend to all facets of marriage, like say, engagement rings? 

Traditionally, a bride would receive the one ring, chosen for her by her partner, and wear that one for the rest of her life. Now, brides can do whatever they want with their rings. Design them themselves, switch them up, redesign them, update them and upgrade them.

Don’t believe us? Just look to the celebrity set. Whether they’re updating them by switching bands or adding gems, or upgrading them altogether by switching to a different ring (or 15—here’s looking at you, Victoria Beckham), Hollywood never feels hemmed in by their original rock.

Hailey Bieber

When Justin Bieber proposed to the then-Hailey Baldwin, now Bieber, in July of 2018, he presented her with an 18-carat Solow & Co diamond ring. Now, six years later, the Biebers have not only announced that they’re expecting their first child, but that they marked the celebration by renewing their vows. And what does a celebrity do when they renew their vows? Renew their engagement ring, of course. The new ring was debuted on both Hailey Bieber’s own Instagram and that of her nail artist, Zola Ganzorigt, when the model showed off her latest manicure. The upgraded ring is a four-prong, oval-cut diamond by Lorraine Schwartz, even bigger and grander than her first. She now wears this new ring pride of place next to her diamond Tiffany & Co. wedding band, while her original engagement ring has moved residence to her pinky finger.

Nicola Peltz Beckham

When Brooklyn Beckham proposed to actress and heiress Nicola Peltz in July 2020, he did so with a brilliant solitaire emerald-cut ring, set in platinum. However, since the couple’s opulent wedding in April 2022, Peltz Beckham has been wearing a new ring. This time, an incredible oval-shaped diamond, seemingly flanked by trillion-cut diamonds. Peltz Beckham wears this with a thick diamond eternity band.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

As far as engagement rings go, royal rings tend to find themselves among the most famous. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s, is no exception. The ring’s main six-carat cushion-cut diamond is sourced from Botswana, a country significant to the couple, and is flanked by two smaller diamonds which once belonged to Prince Harry’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. However, when Meghan stepped out to attend the Trooping of the Colour in 2019, royal-watchers noticed that she had had the ring’s plain gold band replaced by a band of pavé diamonds, lending it a more delicate quality.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s partner, actor Jason Statham, proposed to her in 2016 with a five-carat round-cut diamond set in platinum. Since then, the couple have welcomed two children, Jack in 2017, and Isabella in 2022. Since the birth of her daughter, Huntington-Whiteley has been wearing a tilted pear-shaped diamond by Jessica McCormack.

Victoria Beckham

While we’ve only included one example here, it’s well-known that Victoria Beckham has more than one engagement ring—15 to be exact. Over the course of their 20-year marriage, David Beckham has upgraded Victoria’s original marquise-cut gold ring, to several others, from pear-shaped diamonds, to emeralds, rubies and sapphires.

Jennifer Lopez

While it’s not an update to her original ring, Jennifer Lopez did score an upgrade to her engagement ring from Ben Affleck—over 20 years on. When the couple was first engaged in 2001, Affleck proposed with a 6.10-carat cushion-cut pink diamond by Harry Winston. For their second engagement in 2022, Affleck went down a similar route, choosing a rare 8.5-carat green diamond.

Kim Kardashian

In an infamous turn of events, Kim Kardashian’s first engagement ring—a 15-carat solitaire diamond—was stolen in a Paris robbery in 2020. Quickly after, her former husband bought her another. This time, a 20-carat upgrade by Lorraine Schwartz.

Mirka Federer

After wearing her original emerald-cut ring from husband Roger Federer for a decade, Mirka Federer debuted a fascinating update in 2017. Swapping out the thicker band for a snake-like pavé band that curves around the diamond before continuing around the finger, the new design is distinctive and eye-catching.

A decade after she was gifted her original $50,000 Cartier ring from Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman stepped out in a new ring from her husband—this time, an emerald-cut diamond set in platinum.

Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark

When Prince Frederik of Denmark proposed to our native Mary Donaldson, he did so with a ruby-and-diamond ring meant to harken to the design and colours of the Danish flag. It originally had two emerald-cut rubies flanking a centre diamond. Years later, Crown Princess Mary updated her ring to add two additional diamonds on the outside, continuing the colour pattern.

Khloé Kardashian

Around one year after receiving her $850,000 square-cut diamond from Lamar Odom, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star made an update to include an impressive halo around the band.

Avril Lavigne

Talk about a wedding band. While Chad Kroeger originally proposed to singer Avril Lavigne with a round-cut diamond on a platinum band, instead of giving her a wedding band, he switched up her engagement ring on their wedding day. The new ring, a 10-carat pear-shaped diamond, flanked by two half-moon diamonds on either side, is definitely a show-stopper.
