Wine gurus have shared their favourite Melbourne bars to grab a drink.
A total of 11 Victorian venues made the national 2019 Wineslinger Top 50 list.
One hundred wine and hospitality experts, including winemakers, sommeliers and journalists, voted for their favourite wine bars, restaurants and pubs across Australia.
The Young Gun of Wine’s Wineslinger competition is an annual award recognising venues that triumph wine.
ARLECHIN
Mornane Pl, Melbourne
This late-night laneway bar is part of Guy Grossi’s stable, with an Italian-leaning snack menu and drinks. There’s also an impressive cocktail list.
BAR LIBERTY
234 Johnston St, Fitzroy
Swirl something different in your glass at Bar Liberty, like a funky skin contact ‘orange’ or Jurassic wine, from the tiny Jura region on the France-Swiss border.
BELLOTA
181 Bank St, South Melbourne
Bellota is an extension of the Prince Wine Store, perfect for after-work vinos and snacks at the bar or Euro-style dinners by head chef Nicky Riemer.

Whether you’re sipping a glass at the bar or settling in with a bottle upstairs over dinner, Carlton Wine Room has an impressive, ever-changing wine list. The list notes organic and biodynamic varieties.

Drink from a mix of new and old world wine styles by the glass, like a pet nat pinot rose from Gippsland, or a Crudo Shiraz from the Yarra Valley. Not dining in? Take home a bottle.

Drink a selection of Australian and international drops by the glass at CBD wine bar Embla. There’s a focus on natural and organic styles, best paired with charcuterie or cheese. Or make a meal of it upstairs at the newly-opened Lesa.
FRANCE SOIR

The longstanding Parisian bistro still packs them in most nights of the week. A French-leaning wine list comes naturally, with plenty of by the glass and bottle options. You can also BYO.
KIRK’S WINE BAR
46 Hardware Ln, Melbourne
You’ll find Kirk’s Wine Bar in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, with plenty of Italian, French and local varieties to go around by the glass. There’s also a long bottle list to choose from.

53 Gertrude St, Fitzroy
Marion’s wine list is a mix of homegrown heroes and international hits, with rare varieties enjoyed via coravin. Smaller producers get a nod here. Found next to Cutler and Co, Marion allows for a pre-dinner tipple.
NAPIER QUARTER

This all-encompassing Fitzroy local prides itself on serving espresso in the morning and a great glass of wine at night. The ever-changing wine list features French and Italian picks.
