Grazeland, a new food and entertainment precinct at Spotswood near Scienceworks, will open by next March, providing a large-scale, permanent destination for families and tourists.
Some 50 food vendors will operate out of shipping containers on the spare land, as well as three bars, two stages, a large screen and roving entertainers.
The $4 million project will be created on the site of Australian Ninja Warrior TV set.
The family-friendly location will be open on Friday night and weekends, but also available for private functions at other times.
The attraction will occupy a piece of state-owned land, leased from Museums Victoria.
Grazeland managing director John Forman said quality food was the focus of the project.
“With 50 hand-picked vendors, you can’t lose. It’s a world of food,’’ he said.
Main items on the menu will be priced at $15 maximum to attract families. An entry fee will be $2.50 for 12 years and over.
The initial plans for the precinct, revealed in July, have now been approved by Hobsons Bay council.
Mr Forman said part of the appeal was the location being in the shadow of the West Gate Bridge, with views of the Melbourne city skyline.
“Given Melbourne’s amazing culinary scene, there is no better city to introduce a permanent festival of food,’’ Mr Forman said.

The list of sweet and savoury food operators has yet to be finalised but confirmed already are Cannoleria, 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar, Cripps Family Fish and Chips and Flying Noodles.
The site is the former OCI bottling plant and, at more than 10,000sq m, is equivalent to more than half the MCG playing surface.
Grazeland will be open every weekend of the year, he said, and that outdoor seating would be provided for summer days and cover for the rainy ones.
Push Projects has designed the project with Phil Bucknell of Milieu Projects playing a role in converting the concrete surface into a food festival.
Mr Forman is currently executive general manager of Eureka Skydeck and Eureka 89 as well as president of the Yarra River Business Association.
