Chef’s guide: Where to eat and drink in Yarraville

Gnocchi lamb, prawn saganaki and burnt ends brisket poutine are just some of the dishes you’ll find on this chef’s list of where to eat in Yarraville. But it’s definitely not for the vegetarians.

Nicola Dusi, chef/owner of The Hardware Club, shares his favourite spots to eat and drink around Yarraville.

PIZZA D’ASPORTO

I’m a pizza nerd and d’Asporto’s is one of my favourites. Fragrant crust cooked at lower temperatures in a conveyor belt oven – pretty far from the traditional way of pizza making. This will probably annoy the pizza purists out there, but on a good day, they make one of the best pizzas in Melbourne. Order the “San Vincenzo” pizza with leek and gorgonzola and carpet bomb it with chilli oil. A winner in every sense.

2 – 6 Ballarat St

NAVI

Julian Hills’ restaurant has elevated the average quality of all restaurants in the west from the day he opened the front door. If you are lucky, he will serve you Macedon duck, cuttlefish or kangaroo tail. Go hungry and don’t drive, because you must have matching wines. Without question, one of Melbourne’s best restaurants.

83b Gamon St

ELENI’S KITCHEN

They make this crazy prawn saganaki where the shellfish is soused with a tomato-feta sauce that’s so salty-tasty it will make you laugh. Don’t skip “Florini Pipperies” peppers, lemon potatoes and the quail. Or gather some mates and go for the “Eleni” banquet – a rapid-fire of all Greek-restaurant classics. Just ask them to add the “chef Hristos” dish as well.

28 Anderson St

HARLEY & ROSE

This neighbourhood eatery is another awesome recent addition to the west. They serve one of the best sourdough woodfired pizzas, so make sure to order the hot and spicy Diavola. Gorgonzola croquettes and the OG of cod dips, gnocchi lamb, crab spaghetti… you can’t go wrong with any of the options.

572 Barkly St, West Footscray

UP IN SMOKE

From one of the geniuses behind 8-Bit burgers, Up in Smoke has somehow landed in a back road of Footscray instead of the CBD and we couldn’t be happier. American-ish smokehouse, order the mozzarella sticks, burnt ends brisket poutine (with waffles of course), pulled pork sandwich and have a happy day. Ask for some pickles because they are also amazing. PRO TIP: you can order a side of milk buns to mop up sauces, it’s definitely worth it.

28 Hopkins St, Footscray

DUCHESS OF SPOTSWOOD

A great breakfast spot, get off the train in Spotswood and walk three minutes down the road to Duchess. They have a creative breakfast menu that will amaze all dad-jokes lovers out there, a nice backyard for the sunny days and awesome coffee. The house black pudding is great, and the “Duchess of Pork” crispy pork jowl is great if you are a morning person or have a hangover.

87 Hudsons Rd, Spotswood

Serving pizza by day and elevated Italian classics by night including osso bucco ravioli and chicken neck sausage, The Hardware Club is at 43 Hardware Lane. thehardwareclub.com
