Cafes to try in Melbourne’s outer southeastern suburbs

Melbourne’s outer southeast is spoiled for choice when it comes to cafes and bakeries. From Cranbourne to Berwick, Dandenong to Narre Warren, here are some new places to try and old favourites to revisit.

BERWICK

MAD BENJI

215-225 PARKHILL DR, BERWICK

Burgers. Coffee. Freak shakes. Mad Benji is an extension of burger franchise Mad Patties, found in Mitcham, Doncaster East and Clayton South.

FIVE SPARROWS

EDEN RISE, 1 O’SHEA RD, BERWICK

Five Sparrows is another health-driven cafe, where most menu items are vegetarian or vegan. You can’t go wrong with Inglewood coffee on the machine.

FLOUR AND FERN

14 BLACKBURNE SQ, BERWICK

This health conscious cafe boasts colourful acai bowls, smoothies and raw treats.

PRIMARY AT PIONEERS PARK

1-11 PEEL ST, BERWICK

This cafe sits on the site of the Old Berwick Primary School. Most cafe employees are from the area, including mums, dads and university students. South Gippsland eggs, Noisette, Hope Farm and Deek’s bakeries supply produce.

LITTLE BY LITTLE CAFE

2-10 RESERVE ST, BERWICK

Bring your dog to brunch at Little by Little cafe. It’s open daily and serves a selection of health focused meals, burgers, french toast and lunch offerings.

CLAYTON

TWOSOME STORY

300 CLAYTON RD, CLAYTON

Twosome Story has Australian-Korean inspired cuisine, including Korean fried chicken and burgers. For lunch, try the kimchi soup or chicken katsu on rice. Twosome Story also offer small dishes to share and Korean beers. Find it near Clayton Train Station.

CRANBOURNE

BOON WARRUNG CAFE

Located in the picturesque surrounds of Cranbourne Gardens, Boon Warrung cafe offers an a la carte breakfast and lunch menu. Enjoy the view of the gardens as you devour anything from seafood or smashed avo.

CAFE CIBO BAR

85 EVERLASTING BLVD, CRANBOURNE WEST

Cafe Cibo Bar has well-priced breakfasts like the cauliflower steak with spiced chickpeas, mushrooms and a poached egg. Bring along some friends for dinner and share platters of garlic bread, bruschetta, and arancini. Open for breakfast from 7am daily and diner on Fridays and Saturdays.

RACETRACK CAFE

16 HIGH ST, CRANBOURNE

For all your breakfast egg needs, Racetrack Cafe has eggs poached, scrambled and fried. If you’re unsure of what to eat for dinner, Racetrack Cafe has plenty salads, stir-frys, pasta, and risotto.

THE GRAIN EMPORIUM

318 CLAYTON RD, CLAYTON

The Grain Emporium makes stone-baked breads and pastries, like sourdough loaves and escargots. Pastry fillings are made in house.

DANDENONG

JUSTICE SPECIALTY COFFEE

CNR CLOW ST AND ROBINSON ST, DANDENONG

Proud Mary coffee beans are churned from the machine at Justice Specialty Coffee. Think all your favourite coffee styles, plus the choice of a barista’s platter (includes a double espresso, magic, mini single origin filter and biscotti).

POLISH RYE CRUST BAKERY

101 FOSTER ST, DANDENONG

Think Euro-style baked goods and sourdough breads. The all day breakfast includes bagels and pretzels, there’s a Reuben sandwich and pierogi (Polish dumplings) on the lunch menu.

THE PUBLIC’S CORNER

225 LONSDALE ST, DANDENONG

You’ll find this cafe overlooking Dandenong’s iconic clock tower and Drum theatre. All day dining.

SUB URBAN CAFE

VILLAGE DANDENONG, 81-125 PRINCES HWY, DANDENONG

These guys do breakfast towers — think muffins, pastries, eggs, bacon and all the dippings.

YOUNG UNCLES

127 THOMAS ST, DANDENONG

While this has temporarily closed for renovations, expect to see a new look Young Uncles food and drink on Sept 2. Uncle Small Goods deli next door remains open.

DINGLEY VILLAGE

MATCH & CO CAFE

SHOP 13-14 109/79 CENTRE DANDENONG RD, DINGLEY VILLAGE

This dog-friendly cafe serves single origin coffee and brunch staples like corn fritters and eggs Benedict. The lunch menu includes classic burgers and chips, as well as a kids menu. The Match & Co space can accompany larger group sizes with both indoor and outdoor seating.

There’s some delicious cakes at this suburban cafe. You’ll also find rustic soups, wholesome poke bowls and naughty burgers.

LYNDHURST/ LYNBROOK

SUBURBAN GRIND CAFE

For a number of vegetarian breakfast options, Suburban Grind Cafe has the classics covered. There’s takeaway sandwiches or rolls from the cabinet, and sweet slices available too.

NARRE WARREN

TWISTED SISTA

Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.

Fountain Gate is where the Twisted Sista journey began in 2011. The cafe offers casual dining, with a twist. Elaborate burgers and milkshakes should give you an idea of what to expect.

BUTLER’S KITCHEN

Not sure what to order for lunch? There’s plenty to choose from at Butler’s Kitchen — pancakes, waffles, poke bowl, calamari and burgers.

PAKENHAM

Think mod-Aus food with great tasting coffee. There’s also a great value kids menu with waffles, popcorn chicken and toasties.

ROBERT GORDON KITCHEN

114 Mulcahy Rd, Pakenham

Robert Gordon makes tableware for the best kitchens and restaurants in Australia and last year opened a restaurant of his own. The menu is packed with breakfast staples, salads, burgers, pastas and toasties. Little diners will be pleased with the kids menu (and the cakes and pastries). Open for breakfast and lunch from Wed-Sun: 8am-4pm.
