Good food and good wine served by smiling faces equals a good time.

There’s nothing revolutionary about Bellota’s formula, but such is the consistent skill with which it’s applied, this South Melbourne stalwart continues to go from strength to strength.

That’s due in no small part to the super-tasty, magnificently executed fare from Nicky Riemer’s kitchen.

Bellota.
Bellota.

Dishes at once accessible and familiar, yet elevated with a flavour-first philosophy that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, this is food you could happily eat thrice weekly. And many do.

A magnificent porchetta tonnato with tuna richness amped with salted anchovies comes topped with crackling for added decadent crunch, while stracciatella with a rainbow of beets is teamed with a terrific raisin/caper chutney for an elegant plate of earthy, creamy, sweet and salt.

Pastas might include a sensational eel spaghettini topped with chilli-spiked pangrattato, while perfectly treated gold band snapper on a braise of lentils is all sorts of cool weather comfort.

It’s food made with wine in mind.

Ask one of the switched on staff for advice – or head next door to plunder the Prince Wine Store, where $15 corkage opens up more options than the beautifully chosen yet whistlingly expensive by-the-glass list.

Charming and always eager to please, it’s easy to see why Bellota has such a loyal following. It might not be a revolution, but it is a revelation.
