Black Friday sales have arrived early with the traditional weekend shopping extravaganza extending to a week at many shopping centres and retailers.
Originating in the US, the discount consumer event heralds the beginning of the Christmas shopping period and it’s hoped this year will kick off a boom in retail following the devastating impacts of Covid.
Major shopping centres including Chadstone, The Glen, Northland, Bayside, Westfield Doncaster and DFO’s at South Wharf, Essendon and Moorabbin, will begin their sales on Monday, with Melbourne Central and Highpoint to begin their sales from Friday through the weekend.
Vicinity’s Chief Operating Officer Peter Huddle says: “This is our first major shopping event since reopening and we’re encouraging customers to take advantage of the week-long offers and deals to ensure everyone who visits our centres can shop safely, that’s why we’re extending hours to give customers more time to shop with us.
“To help customers save time and offer a more convenient shopping experience we have a number of new initiatives including contactless Parcel Concierge and options for customers to pre-book a visit to their favourite store.”
From Friday until next Monday, Highpoint will trade for a total of 50 hours in support of over 150 retailers hosting sales offers and discounts – from any where between 10 percent off selected items to 60 percent off storewide across gifting, fashion, homewares, beauty and children’s toys. Major participating retailers include SEED, JD Sports and Cotton On.
“This year, Highpoint’s Black Friday shopping experience will look a little bit different, and for good reason. The safety of Highpoint shoppers and local residents is the centres number one priority, and we will continue to implement COVIDSafe measures under guidance from the Victorian state government, ” says Cristina Persico, Centre Manager at Highpoint Shopping Centre.
“We anticipate that many shoppers will be excited about our retailer offers, which is why we have extended our trading hours across four big days to ensure there is more time and space for the sales to be enjoyed by all. Our best advice is plan your visit to Highpoint, including preparing your shopping list, calling retailers ahead to check stock levels and arriving at the centre during off-peak times such as early morning and later in the evening.”
Melbourne Central, with over 300 retailers located under the one roof, will also offer customers the chance to snap up a pre-Christmas bargains from Friday.
Melbourne Central has more than 150 offers alongside unique COVID-safe experiences including a Curated Shopping Guide, a 10K Cash Giveaway and free parking.
Melbourne Central centre manager Ryan Ling says they’re looking forward to welcoming customers back into the precinct and have already seen a consistent increase in visitation numbers since the easing of lockdown restrictions.
“With upcoming Black Friday, Christmas and end of year festivities, the safety of our staff, retailers, customers and visitors remains our top priority and we’ve been working hard to ensure the precinct is a safe place for all. In addition to a rigorous cleaning and sanitisation program we’ve also introduced new technology including heat mapping and digital shopping queues, making it a safe and convenient experience when visiting Melbourne Central,” he says.
