Aussie models and swimwear brands have made a big splash at the annual glamour Miami Swim Week.
While it’s freezing here, they were heating up the runway in the latest swimwear trends we can expect to see this summer from Aussie brands including Aqua Blu Swim, Monday Swimwear and Vincija Swim.
Former Sports Illustrated star Jessica Gomes led the local model brigade, returning a decade after she made her last appearance in support of her friend’s label.
“It was incredible to see how much the industry has changed since I last walked in the show over 10 years ago, how diverse the catwalk is now.
“I opened for my friend’s show Monday Swimwear. Tash Oakley is Australian who owns the brand with her best friend Devin,” she says.
She was joined by fellow Australian sun-kissed stunners Natalie Roser, Shannon Lawson, Leticia Thomas, Jennifer Atilemile, Steph Raynor and Georgia Gibbs.
Embracing the move towards featuring more real women and body shapes on the catwalk, Thomas had the coveted role of opening and closing the Aqua Blu show, while Atilemile rocked the runway for Monday Swimwear.
“It was amazing, I never thought I’d walk my first international runway in a bikini. I was super nervous to start with, as a bigger model you don’t usually see that on the runway,” Atilemile says.
“I don’t really fit the beauty ideal but when I got out there I felt I really belonged there. It felt so empowering.”
Atilemile, who has recently shot a campaign for Macy’s in New York, says many of the key swimwear trends translate well to curvy women.
“The bright colours and high-waisted cuts are really coming back. The 80s high-cut style is so flattering to any body shape,” she says.
Gomes says the array of colours and prints will inspire swimwear shoppers this summer.
“I’m loving all the bright colour ways, lavender and cobalt blue. But also the neutral and gold tones, as well as a splash of leopard print,” she says.
Aqua Blu designer Kristian Chase had Aussie model and body-positive advocate Thomas open and close for the brand.
“She closed wearing a stunning custom made velvet navy blue embellished bodysuit with tulle skirt and also wore a bespoke Angelina Alvarez Design crown,” he says.

“Bold prints and one-pieces are in. Hang up the boring two-pieces and try something more daring,” Chase suggests.
Black and white monochrome tones, bright neons, thin stringed bikinis as well as full briefs, feminine silhouettes with a sport-luxe twist and ‘80-’s inspired cuts will all be key trends in summer swimwear this season.
