When you’re on the road, you come across plenty of funky looking signs and cameras - you wouldn’t be blamed for not knowing what every single one of them was.
One Adelaide local has taken to social media after noticing one camera in particular that wasn’t quite like anything else he’d seen.
Now, Aussies have figured out exactly what they’re looking at - and it could be detrimental for drivers.

“Is this a speed camera?”
An Adelaide Reddit user has taken to the platform after spotting a camera they’d never seen before whilst on a drive.
“Is this a speed camera?” the poster asked.
“On Montacute Rd Hectorville. No signage and not on the daily list of cameras.”
The camera is a large, standalone camera propped up by a tripod on the footpath - nothing like standard speeding cameras we usually come across.

What is it?
Commenters on the post were just as unsure about the camera, having never seen it before themselves.
“What sort of tech is it?” one person asked.
“Whatever it is, you can rest assured that it won’t be good for anyone driving past it,” said another.
However, others were fairly sure it was a speeding camera after all.
“There’s usually a Ute parked directly behind these with a camera operator. I’ve seen these before. They are a speed camera I’m certain,” one person said.
“Sure is, they used to put these in the hills and throw camouflage over it so it looked like a bush,” said another.
“They always have these in the hills, behind bushes and stuff. These aren’t often listed on the ‘daily speed camera’ locations. They also often chuck those camouflage netting stuff over them too,” a third added.
The guesses were right!
As per the Government of South Australia’s Department for Infrastructure and Transport website, these cameras are, in fact, speeding cameras.
The mobile speed cameras are nothing new for South Australia Police, and are operated from a vehicle mount or tripod, temporarily located on the road network to enforce speed limits.
Nowhere in Australia is it legally required to disclose the sites of speed cameras, so if you don’t want to get in trouble, keep an eye out - or don’t speed.
