American’s mind blown by ‘genuinely insane’ Aussie habit

An American influencer has taken to social media asking about a common Aussie act. Is it as normal as we think it is?

An early morning ritual many of us do has officially been debunked, after a popular US influencer branded the common bed-time habit “gross”.

Brett Chody, a content creator with over 200,000 TikTok followers, shared a fact she said she was “genuinely insane” for not knowing.

In the video, the 25-year-old referenced a poll posted by We Met At Acme – a podcast hosted by Lindsey Metselaar – that asked people what they do with their pyjamas after they wear them.

The options were washing them, putting them back in the drawer, putting them under or behind your pillow. Pollers could also select “other”.

Brett said that the option for putting them under your pillow was winning by a landslide – which came as a total shock.

“I have genuinely never once in my life, heard of anyone putting pyjamas under or behind their pillow after you wear them,” she said.

“Can someone explain? Because I feel like I’m going insane, because that answer was winning. I have so many questions. I’m shook over this.”

Most commenters on the now-viral video thought that it was the obvious thing to do – most of them being Australian.

“Thought this was an Australian thing,” one commenter said.

“Aussie here. Pjs go under my pillow,” another agreed.

Lots were even more concerned about what the alternative would be.

“I didn’t know that people DIDN’T do this?? It makes most sense, where else do they go?” said one person.

“Wait, where are you putting them then? Why would you put pjs you’ve already worn back in your wardrobe??” another said.

But, there were still a number of people in the comments who agreed with Brett, saying that not only was putting your pyjamas under your pillow odd, it could also be unhygienic.

“I feel like I’m being gaslit. No way this is real,” said one person.

“Why aren’t we washing them?” another asked.

Is the daily habit we all do actually unhygienic?

Well, not necessarily.

Cleaning guru Chantel Mila, best known on social media as @mama_mila_au, said it’s totally normal to put your pyjamas under your pillow in between wears – and it can even be a great thing for busy families.

“I’ve heard of people keeping their pj’s under their pillow and honestly, it can be a handy little bedtime hack to save time at night (particularly with kids pjs to make the night-time routine a little quicker),” she told news.com.au.

But, she said it’s not necessarily the best option for everyone.

“That said, if you tend to get hot or sweaty while you sleep, you might prefer to wash your pj’s after every wear,” she added.

“It really comes down to personal preference but generally, washing them every two to three wears is a good balance and keeps things feeling fresh and hygienic.”
