Actor Sharon Johal breaks new ground in Binge drama The Twelve

The actor, fashion influencer and former lawyer will break new ground on Australian screens – and although she is nervous about backlash she says it’s very important.

Who is Sharon Johal?

Sharon Johal has never been afraid to push and break boundaries.

The actor, fashion influencer and former lawyer is one of the country’s most respected voices on broad issues and also those close to her heart.

As the first Indian Punjabi in a mainstream television role on Neighbours, Johal is set to inspire again with her character on the second season of Binge drama The Twelve.

“The writers envisaged an Australian born devout Sikh woman and I am an Australian born Punjabi Sikh woman.,’’ Johal said.

“As a devout Sikh, when you are baptised you become a Khalsa. Khalsa men and women wear turbans and this is the first time you’ll see a Khalsa woman significant character wearing a turban on Australian screens.

“We discussed how to best represent her and give the opportunity for others to see themselves in her. We explored modest fashion in Australia as your skin is mostly covered. This is another first in breaking barriers and inclusivity. When I do these things it’s for people to feel seen and safe.”

Johal admits she is nervous about potential backlash but feels it’s an important step for the industry and community at large. She plays Parvinder Sangar, one of the jurors of the case, who is a mother of two and a devout Sikh deeply connected to her community.

“She is a nurse, she’s very warm and empathetic to all parties,’’ Johal said.

“She has a really beautiful relationship with the character played by Tasma Walton.

“The writers had the idea and it’s about honouring it. I did a lot of research and did my own method acting. I woke up at 4am every day to pray and had my hair covered. I never thought I’d have the opportunity work on probably the best Australian drama we have at the moment.”

Johal is also keen to explore opportunities in the US and created a “f. it bucket list” of things to tick off and recently did her first stand up comedy show.

She flew back and forth to Perth for filming of The Twelve alongside a raft of top actors including Sam Neill.

“Sam was everybody’s friend and the first time you meet him you’re awestruck,’’ Johal said.

“He is extremely generous and kind, and such a great actor. Goals, really!”
