An American woman who flew to Pakistan to marry her teenage online boyfriend but was left heartbroken when his family forbid the relationship has become an internet sensation.
Onijah Andrew Robinson, 33, from New York, said she travelled to the nations capital Karachi to meet and marry the 19-year-old man in October 2024.
When their alleged plans to tie-the-knot were blocked by his concerned family, Ms Robinson reportedly “refused to leave”, and the “stranded” woman began camping outside his family home.
A young man who claims to be her son later made a video alleging Ms Robinson has “bipolar disorder”, stressing he was trying to get her back to the US, the Mail Online reports.
But it took more than three months for the abandoned woman to get on a flight, despite kind locals rallying around to support her.
During which time her upbeat attitude towards her plight and the unusual way she spent her time catapulted her to online fame.
‘American lady in Pakistan’
The dramatic saga first hit local headlines when Ms Robinson began holding her own press conferences in which she would issue updates on her situation, give unsolicited feedback on the state of the country, and also bizarrely ask for large sums of money.
At first, it appeared she was asking for cash so she could stay and start a life in Pakistan.
But despite multiple appearances before waiting media, she never explained what the cash requests were for.
“I’m asking for 100K or more. I need 20K by this week, in my pockets, in cash. That’s a demand to the government,” she told journalists during one conference shared on TikTok.
In another interview, she claimed: “Make sure you get this on your camera, I’m married and we are moving to Dubai very soon. We’re going to have our baby in Dubai.”
She becomes a very relatable internet meme
When later quizzed on what the money was for she said: “It’s against my religion to tell y’all my business.”
The moment has since become a viral meme, as when taken out of context, her words have proved fitting for a number of mundane everyday moments.
“When my co-workers ask me anything about my personal life,” one reads.
“Me when people ask if I am dating anyone,” another states.
As one jokes: “When they call to ask if I want to extend my car’s warranty.”
Videos shared on social media also show the local celebrity flanked by security guards as she walks down a street. Another sees her eating a Macca’s meal as people approach her table to shake her hand.
The widespread attention has even landed Ms Robinson a number of low-budget brand deals, with many dubbing her an “icon” and “queen” on social media. She’s also landed her own unique search term, “the American lady in Pakistan”.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has reportedly intervened to help Ms Robinson, extending her expired visitor’s visa and setting up a flight back to the US.
The unlucky-in-love’s plight is now seemingly over, with the 33-year-old said to be “on her way home”, according to the Independent.
