A young thug jailed for his role in a brawl that led to the death of a tradie has again fronted court — this time for kidnapping a woman and injuring her.

Liam Casley, 21, pleaded guilty in the County Court on Monday to charges of kidnapping, recklessly cause injury and two related summary offences, including driving while disqualified.

He appeared via video link from custody. Casley, who is unemployed, kidnapped the woman at Glen Iris on April 22, last year and injured her.

The driving charge relates to him being caught behind the wheel on Corringle Dr on April 23, 2023.

Casley will come back to court for a plea hearing on June 4.

He was sentenced in the Supreme Court of Victoria in August 2021 to eight months’ prison and an eight-month community corrections order after pleading guilty to affray for his role in a fight that killed Cam Smith in Seaford.

In the County Court on Monday, Casley’s lawyer Lachlan Cameron copped a serve from

Judge Carolene Gwynn who questioned him on why documents were not received until late last Thursday when the matter had been booked in since September last year.

“It’s an inconvenience because 227 pages of material I have had to try and access this morning effectively and the Crown have not had an opportunity to respond which would be the normal course,’’ she said.

“That’s why there’s filing requirements. I am entitled to expect better and it just seems to be common place that counsel don’t worry about filing requirements and just say ‘look, I am sorry, and that’s that’. It’s just not good enough, quite frankly.”

Mr Cameron apologised profusely and asked for pleas to be adjourned in light of the need for a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment for Casley.

But Judge Gwynn said the pleas would be taken and a new date set for a plea hearing.
