Wyndham Council’s city operations direction Stephen Thorpe blamed motorists’ bad parking behaviour for the “sharp rise” in the number of infringements issued.

“This (increase) relates largely to the choices of some motorists parking in areas they shouldn’t be, or parking longer than the allocated time,” he said.

Parking in a ‘no stopping’ zone, on nature strips, against the direction of travel, or in loading zones were also common parking fails, he said.

“Monitoring parking is not about raising revenue, it is part of a holistic approach which includes the design of spaces to incorporate adequate parking spots, encouraging active travel where possible, and community education,” Mr Thorpe said.

What should you do before paying a parking fine?

“Issuing infringements is part of the process, to ensure that motorists are aware of the rules in place, keep streets safe and allow equitable access to parking in our busier areas.”

Mr Thorpe warned people who did not pay could face legal action by Fines Victoria.
