Wyndham Council left with $200k repair bill after copper cable thefts
Ratepayers will fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix sports grounds around Wyndham after thieves stole copper cables from several pavilions in the dead of night.

Copper cables have been stolen from 10 Wyndham sports grounds over the past few weeks — leaving ratepayers with a $200,000 repair bill.
Mayor Mia Shaw said thieves had pilfered the cables in the dead of night and urged people to report any suspicious behaviour to police.

This weekend’s matches have not been affected, but the Wyndham Leader understands some pavilions have been left without working lights.
“These thefts are very concerning and result in significant work needing to be undertaken to make these facilities fully operational again,” Cr Shaw said.

“It is also costing ratepayers a substantial amount of money to replace the cables and reinstall them.”
Cr Shaw said there had been reports of up to four people in two SUVs seen in the immediate areas of the thefts.
“Our sporting facilities are places where our community can come together and connect,” she said.
“With copper cabling being stolen and these facilities being rendered unusable, the entire community is missing out.”
