A young soon-to-be dad who spat, kicked and hurled abuse at police after a boozy night out in Werribee has been ordered by a magistrate to make a $1750 donation to the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Douglas Lovell, 21, pleaded guilty yesterday over the “ugly incidents” in January last year, during which he kicked the inside of a squad car and caused $85 worth of damage.

WERRIBEE PAEDOPHILE FRONTS COURT AGAIN

The court heard police had pulled over a car during a routine interception when Lovell crossed the street and started verbally attacking police, calling them “f***ing dogs” and kicking their divvy van.

Lovell was arrested after he failed to provide his name and address to officers, and continued his rampage later in the cells, punching, headbutting and spitting on a CCTV camera, kicking his cell door and flushing a pillow down the toilet.

The court heard that since then Lovell has been seeing a psychiatrist, and now works five and a half days a week as a forklift driver to support his pregnant girlfriend, who is due to give birth in June.

Lovell’s defence lawyer said his client was “in a much better place” than when the offences were committed.

“These are ugly incidents and police shouldn’t have to put up with that sort of behaviour … but these are incidents that occur in the context of heavy alcohol consumption but also mental health difficulties,” he said.

Magistrate Jennifer Grubissa said Lovell had made strides to get his life on track and deserved a chance to continue making progress with the help of his psychiatrist.

“It appears Mr Lovell has made some really good gains so I’m concerned to ensure the court doesn’t thwart those endeavours,” she said.

“If I was to move to something like a community corrections order at this stage, with your behavioural issues, my guess is that wouldn’t go well for you or for corrections.”

What happens in a criminal trial?

Ms Grubissa sentenced Lovell to a community corrections order, which she adjourned for two years on conditions he continue to work with his psychiatrist and “stay out of trouble”.

“Hopefully you don’t make your way back to that sort of behaviour because if you do, Mr Lovell, it’s not going to be greeted by the court with an adjourned undertaking as it is today,” she warned.

“This is your opportunity to show the court that you’re serious about your own rehabilitation.

She ordered him to make a $1750 donation to the police charity the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

“The police were on the receiving end of all this behaviour,” she said.

“You’ve got a job at the moment Mr Lovell and I don’t think you’d like it if people were screaming at you, yelling at you, swearing at you, spitting at you.

”It’s nothing you should need to tolerate while you’re undertaking your employment and the police are no different.”

Lovell was also ordered to pay $85 for the cost of repairs to the police car he damaged.
