A man who was “sick of the rubbish” marijuana he was buying has been caught growing more than 17kg of pot at his Werribee home.
Richard Davies, 34, yesterday pleaded guilty to cultivating the crop for his personal use.
When police raided the father of two’s home on March 22 they found cannabis growing in several areas of the Lyrebird Court home, including a child’s bedroom.
The Werribee Magistrates’ Court heard Davies regularly smoked weed to manage pain from a chronic shoulder injury.

Davies’ lawyer told the court his client’s injury had left unable to work and he had battled depression as a result.
“Effectively (Davies) has grown these plants because he was sick of the other rubbish he was buying when he was using for pain management,” the lawyer said.
“It’s not an insignificant amount (of cannabis) and that much is conceded but … there was no sophisticated hydroponic set up involved.”
Magistrate Costas Kilias said he accepted the drugs were grown for personal use.
“I accept it’s not a commercial situation,” he said.
“I accept that you’ve had a history of injury that has lead you to making that very poor decision.
Davies was fined $2000 without conviction.
