Hoppers Crossing foodie Joey Spiteri wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after finishing high school — so he hopped on a plane to eat his way around America.
The Thomas Carr College graduate spent time researching the must-visit spots across the States, relying heavily on social media, blogs and Youtube recommendations.
But it was after a trip to a county fair, the then 22-year-old found a new style of dessert not yet seen in Australia.
“I fell in love with the funnel cake dessert,” he says.
“It’s a cross between a pancake, doughnut and waffle, that’s topped … traditionally with icing sugar and strawberries.”
When he returned to Melbourne, Joey opened his own business Sweet Street Desserts in Hoppers Crossing, which has been trading for almost one year.
The self-taught cook sells funnel cakes, as well as another US favourite cheesecake on a stick, allowing customers to pimp out their desserts with chocolate and toppings.
Biggest sellers include the apple pie or Nutella and strawberry funnel cake, the Oreo cheesecake on a stick or the crème brulee or unicorn cannoli.
“It’s been a whirlwind. We started with a bang in June 2018 with people happy to try the food,” he says.

Joey prepares the desserts fresh daily, selling his creations with the help of his mother, girlfriend, sister and friends.
“There’s nothing like this (in the West). I think we provide an amazing product and amazing service, which is hard to find these days.”
“It’s a different experience coming to your franchise dessert bars, the service and quality of food sets us apart.”
Sweet Street Desserts is holding a fundraiser for its first birthday on Sunday June 2 from 1pm to 5pm, with $1 from every purchase is donated to Werribee Mercy Special Care Nursery.
Sweet Street Desserts is at 234 Old Geelong Rd, Hoppers Crossing.
