Western Melbourne’s top performing NAPLAN schools have been revealed following the 2019 results release.
Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May.
The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.
Across the western Melbourne region Year 3 and Year 5 students at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School got an average NAPLAN score of 523.2 – the area’s top performing primary school.

The second best performing primary school was Westbourne Grammar School where the average result was 518.5 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.
The third best performing primary school was Heathdale Christian College where the school-wide average score was 509.6.
Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School was Western Melbourne’s top performing high school. Their Year 7 and Year 9 students received an average NAPLAN score of 614.0.
The second-best performing high school was Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School where the average score was 611.0, while the third best performing school was Heathdale Christian College where the average score was 607.3.
Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School principal Kate Dullard said she commended students for “embracing the experience of NAPLAN”.
“I thank our teachers for their strong focus on literacy and numeracy, alongside the many other learning goals they attend to, and for helping us to create a culture of care and wellbeing that enables students to thrive in their academic pursuits,” Ms Dullard said.
The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, the federal body responsible for developing national curriculum and assessment, this year revamping the MySchool website where school’s NAPLAN results are publicly displayed.
Focus groups across the country found MySchool was difficult to navigate and was filled with technical language and jargon.
ACARA also had to further explain on the website the benefits of NAPLAN and MySchool to parents.
