When do pubs open: Manhattan Hotel, Burvale, Young and Jackson closed until November 9

We’ve all been waiting to ‘get on the beers’. But if you want to do so at a large number of popular Melbourne pubs now that restrictions have eased, you’re going to have wait a little longer. See if your local watering hole is one of them.

More than 80 pubs in Melbourne’s suburbs, owned by the ALH Group, are not reopening until November 9 at the earliest.

Melburnians hoping to ‘get on the beers’ at some of their favourite pubs will have to wait a bit longer, with a major hospitality pub group delaying reopening of 80 suburban venues.

It comes after the ALH Group displayed billboards out the front of its pubs this month urging the Government to let them open up.

The group — which owns more than 300 pubs across Australia — won’t be reopening its venues until at least November 9.

ALH spokesman David Curry said it would not be viable for the group’s pubs to open their doors before that date.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced the easing of coronavirus restrictions on Monday, October 26, which allowed Melbourne’s pubs to have 20 seated patrons indoors and 50 patrons outdoors from Wednesday, October 28.

The limits are set to be increased to 40 people indoors and 70 outdoors from November 8.

A generic message appeared on the Facebook pages of ALH group pubs in Melbourne on Tuesday, October 27, informing patrons of the group’s decision.

Among ALH’s venues are the historic Young and Jackson pub in the CBD, Richmond’s The Royal Oak and Port Melbourne’s Rex Hotel.

ALH also owns Doncaster’s Shoppingtown Hotel and Thornbury’s Croxton Park Hotel, which often host live gigs, and two James Squire-themed brewhouses in Frankston and Wheelers Hill.

“After the announcements yesterday, we want to let our locals know we will still remain closed from October 28,” the post read.

“We’re working through our reopening plan and hope to bring you good news on November 9.

“In the meantime, we won’t be taking any bookings but bear with us, an update is on the way and we’ll share our reopening plan with you soon.”

The group has also opted to keep pubs closed in Corio, Ballarat, Morwell and other parts of regional Victoria.

ALH’s decision comes after a billboard demanding pubs re-open had been on display outside some of its venues in Melbourne’s outer east this month, including Ringwood’s The Manhattan and the Bayswater Hotel.

The billboard read: “How do you get 52,000 Victorians back to work? Open the pubs!”

Supermarket giant Woolworths is a majority owner of the ALH Group and its BWS and Dan Murphys bottle shops, often connected to some of the pubs, are trading as usual.
