A 10-year-old girl has been reunited with her family after she found herself locked in her school in Melbourne’s west on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to Mossfiel Primary School in Hoppers Crossing at about 7pm after the girl called for help saying she couldn’t leave the locked school.

Firefighters and police gained access to the school and located the young girl shortly after.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers were called for a welfare check after the girl was unable to find her way out of the school building.

“Emergency services responded and located the girl uninjured and she was reunited with her family,” she said.

Her mother, who asked not to be named, said she had called police when her daughter didn’t return home from school at 4pm and was out searching for her when the good news came in.

“She had fallen asleep on a beanbag and someone else had put another on top of her,” she said.

It’s unclear how the girl was left in the Mossfiel Primary School after school closed at 4pm.

The Department of Education has been contacted for comment.
