When will gyms open in Melbourne: Victorian gyms permanently closed

Wyndham residents want to get back to the gym according to a Leader poll, and with some regional gyms forced to close permanently due to Victoria’s long lockdown there are fears others will follow suit.

Victoria to reopen with retail and hospitality easing

Wyndham residents are itching to get back to the gym as Melbourne’s tough lockdown restrictions are eased.

A Wyndham Leader Facebook poll found the majority of respondents wanted gyms opened from November 1 — the date the State Government initially slated for when most retail and businesses could start to reopen.

UPDATE: MELBOURNE GYMS GIVEN NOVEMBER OPENING DATE

Premier Daniel Andrews promised Melburnians last week “significant” new freedoms would be granted on Sunday.

Melbourne’s rolling 14 day case average hit 4.6 on Sunday after a week of low case numbers.

But in a blow to Melbourne’s five million inhabitants, Mr Andrews said on Sunday a cluster of new infections in the city’s north had prompted him to put a “cautious pause” on easing restrictions.

Gyms and fitness studios in regional Victoria will be allowed to open from Wednesday, October 28, for a maximum of 20 people, or 10 per space, subject to a one person per 8sq m rule.

But gyms and fitness fanatics in Melbourne must wait for the Premier’s next lockdown announcement, expected to be made within the next few days, to find out if they too will get the green light.

Vic Active spokesman Tim Schleiger said the announcement for gyms in regional Victoria was too little too late for some operators.

It was vital gyms in metropolitan areas were allowed to open at the same time as the rest of the state so members could improve their mental and physical health and businesses could stay afloat, he said.

He also said the 20 person limit wasn’t viable for many larger fitness centres.

“It’s wonderful that regional gyms are open but in saying that there are 10 regional gyms that won’t be opening on the other side of this,” Mr Schleiger said.

“The state has chosen politics and profit over the mental health of Victorians … we want to get them open so people can start feeling better about their lives again.”

Victoria on Monday recorded zero new virus cases and zero deaths.

It was the first time since June 9 when no new cases were discovered in a 24 hour period.
