Wyndham sensation “Jerry the Giraffe” has been found and returned home after he was abducted overnight to the “joy” of his beloved community.
Popular Werribee celebrity “Jerry the Giraffe” — who reaches 2.5m and is made out of a 44 gallon drum — was stolen by heartless thieves after he spent the night in front of a Huntington Ct home on October 9 about 2am.
But to the relief of his many fans in Werribee and his creator Dale Cations a friend spotted Jerry outside at a property in Werribee about 6pm on Thursday.
Mr Cations retrieved Jerry from the property where police and paramedics had also attended for an unrelated matter.
It did not take long for locals to fall in love with Jerry since he burst onto the scene about 18 months ago, with Mr Cations driving him around and placing him in front of local landmarks, schools and hospitals.
Despite his disappointment at the theft, Mr Cations said he was “hopeful” the popular giraffe would turn up somewhere.
“I thought it was one of my mates knocking around but it looks like they took some pieces of wood from the front yard and were lurking around the neighbour’s trailer as well,” he said.
Mr Cations — who drops Jerry across the various locations — said the giraffe had gotten so popular, he had received “regular calls” from schools and hospitals hoping to host him for the day.
“It’s been massive,” he said.
“When we made the Instagram page it became a pretty big thing and people were requesting him. He’s been to hospital, aged care homes, kindergartens, homes with disabilities … the response has been ridiculous.
“And then you get a call from little Johnny who has ADHD saying how happy he was to have him and it brings a semi tear to your eye”.
Jerry’s adventures — which are documented on Instagram — have taken him to the Werribee Zoo, in front of houses, busy roads and parks, with locals stopping by and taking photos.
Since his grand arrival on the streets of Wyndham 18 months ago, Jerry has visited nearly 100 locations from kindergartens, hospitals and the homes of disabled children.
