VTCA Division 1: Deer Park opener Angelo Emmanuel scores maiden ton

An opener’s maiden First XI century and a new international marquee’s sensational form have Deer Park looking even more formidable than thought.

Deer Park’s Angelo Emmanuel has finally had the moment in the sun he has been waiting for.

The talented opener broke through for his maiden Victorian Turf Cricket Association Division 1 century on Saturday to help guide the ladder leaders to a 106-run thumping of Altona Roosters.

Emmanuel reached triple figures for the first time since his highest score of 107 in Division 3 in November 2016 against East Keilor.

Before his knock at the weekend, Emmanuel had passed 50 on six occasions but he had been unable to convert.

He was eventually dismissed for 102 runs from 108 balls in an innings which included a 136-run opening stand with Hashan Wanasekara, the club’s only other division 1 century maker this season.

Deer Park captain Ricky Suvada described Emmanuel as a player “who looks like he will make runs every week”.

“He’s a very classy batsman as so many left-handers are,” he said.

“It was a fantastic innings and I’m pleased he was finally able to break through for the big score he has threatened for so long.

“Our top five have been in great form throughout the season and it was Angelo’s turn to stand up and deliver some runs.”

Emmanuel also finished with figures of 2-20 from five overs as the Roosters lost their last six wickets for just 11 runs.

The spinner’s scalps took his season tally to nine.

“He has a knack of breaking key partnerships for us,” Suvada said.

“One of his best assets is the Dooshra because not many players are able to pick it. It’s a weapon he can rely on during critical stages of games.”

Deer Park’s latest signing, West Indian Jarlaine Seales, was also among the wickets again finishing with 2-15 from six overs.

He also hit a quick fire 19 runs from nine balls to help his side reach 4-227.

It follows on his debut performance of 4-39 against Airport West St Christophers a week earlier.

Suvada said he couldn’t be happier with the new recruit’s start to life at John McLeod Reserve.

“He’s 6’6” and brings a real sense of energy to our group,” he said.

“Even when the boys are down he’s always got something to say. He bowls with real pace which can make a real impact for us with the ball.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how his season plays out.”

The Roosters were bowled out for 121 inside 30 overs with Nadeera Thuppahi top scoring with 29.

Deer Park remain undefeated on top of the ladder after eight games and face Seddon in their next game.

Airport West St Christophers will travel to take on the Roosters.
