VSDCA: Yarraville appoints former Premier Cricketer Jonah Koch as coach

Yarraville has turned to a former Australian junior as its new VSDCA coach with a family connection playing a big role in his appointment.

Yarraville has already seen what it can expect from its new coach, Jonah Koch.

The former Footscray cricketer played the last six games of the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association with the club he will lead for the next two seasons.

Koch, who represented Australia at under 17 level, was appointed to the top job last week after he finished his time in the state’s top competition last season with 135 games across all grades to his name.

He took 175 wickets at an average of 22.01 during his time with Footscray.

Earlier this year for Yarraville, he took nine wickets at 20.6 in a preview of what he can bring to Subbies cricket every week.

Yarraville vice-president Mitch Wood said Koch was “clearly the best man for the job”.

He will take on a playing coach role.

“You don’t play that many Premier Cricket games if you aren’t a quality player,” he said.

“Jonah has been in and around our squad for quite a while now because his older and younger brothers, Brayden and Zachary, are involved at the club.

“He’s also mates with a lot of people here so we know he is going to fit in quite well.”

Yarraville finished last season in 14th position with just three wins to its name including those against Taylors Lakes and Melton who both finished below the Eagles on the ladder.

But Wood believes the young group is bound to improve next season.

“Having a coach like Jonah who knows what it takes to win is very important,” he said.

“The boys have a great leader who should be looking to take the next steps in their development.”

Wood said the club’s recruiting was still a “work in progress” ahead of the new season.

“We’re looking to add some more experience to our playing group because we think it would be really beneficial,” he said.
