If there is one word to describe the performance of Werribee’s opening batters and bowlers on Saturday, it’s fireworks.
It was a showing which helped the Tigers cement their spot in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association’s South/West XI top six with a six-wicket win against Malvern.
Led by Jonathon Burton’s three wickets, Werribee had the hosts reeling at 5-22 when Michael Beer was dismissed.
But Malvern was able to recover to be all out for 170 thanks to a innings stabling 94-run partnership between Tom Rickarby and Ben Nethersole (64).
James Freeman played an important role cleaning up the tail as he finished with 4-39.
Captain Tim O’Brien admitted he was a “little disappointed” he couldn’t restrict their hosts even more.
“I don’t think we could have asked for a better start,” he said.
“It was a good toss to win because there was a bit in the pitch throughout the day. But there was a little more on offer when play started.
“Malvern deserve a lot of credit for how they were able to steady the ship and put a good score on the board.
“But you’re always hoping to have to chase a lower score when you get on the board.”
Opener Matt Dean picked up where the bowlers left off as he scored a quick fire 43 runs off 43 balls.
O’Brien (45 runs) and Nathan Taylor (44) also both made starts but couldn’t convert those into half-centuries.
Malvern threatened to pull off an unlikely comeback when it sparked a mini collapse taking 4-12 with the Tigers still 12 runs from victory.
“I would by lying if I said we didn’t get a little nervous towards the end but it was pleasing we were able to steady,” O’Brien said.
“It was a good even team performance. Matt got us off to a flyer with the bat which was important because it helped put us into a good position.”
The win helped the Tigers extend the gap between themselves and their hosts as the race for finals action heats up.
But Malvern was able to narrow it again on Sunday after winning its makeup fixture against Ormond by three wickets.
“We spoke about the importance of winning a double point game and to finish the job is pleasing,” O’Brien said.
“Hopefully we can build some more momentum in the next few games.”
Werribee will face third place Ormond on Saturday in a game which could play a big role in helping shape the finals outlook.
