Tyler Rainbow: Former junior cricket star sexually assaulted, threatened to rape teen girl

A former junior cricketer drunkenly snuck into a teenage girl’s bedroom in the western suburbs and threatened to rape her.

Top former western suburb junior cricketer Tyler Rainbow snuck into a girl’s bedroom and drunkenly told her “I’m horny”, forcibly kissed her and threatened to rape her, a court has heard.

At Sunshine Magistrates Court last Thursday, Rainbow was ordered onto the sex offender’s register for eight years and was sentenced to an 18 month community corrections order.

Rainbow, 20, of Sunshine West, had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and to threatening to commit a sexual offence.

Magistrate Alanna Duffy described the offences as “serious” and said “this kind of behaviour needs to be punished”.

Court documents reveal Rainbow, an aspiring former junior cricket star, then-18, had been out drinking UDLs and Vodka Cruisers with a mate one night in late 2018.

The two returned to a house in the western suburbs, where a group had gathered and were drinking.

Rainbow’s victim went to bed but woke up after 2am to him sitting on her bed, saying “give me a kiss”.

She repeatedly refused, but Rainbow “became more persistent”, according to a police summary of the case.

“(Rainbow) was puckering his lips, saying ‘give me a kiss, just one kiss’,” the summary says.

Rainbow got on top of the girl and began forcefully kissing her face and neck as she tried to push him away, before saying “keep quiet”, “I’m horny” and complaining that he hadn’t had sex in three weeks.

“I’ll have sex with you and rape you,” Rainbow said.

When the girl sat up in bed and moved away from Rainbow, he grabbed her around the waist, laid her down on her back and put his hands down the back of her pyjama pants.

The attack only ended when another girl came looking for him and angrily demanded to know why he was in the girl’s bedroom.

Within moments, Rainbow sent his shocked victim a message telling her to not tell anyone what had happened, that he was drunk, and that he “didn’t mean it”.

Rainbow was arrested at his family home just after Christmas in 2018, and the case took more than two years to go through the legal system.

Rainbow has been ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid community work and counselling as part of his sentence.
