Two people and their pet dogs have managed to escape their burning home in Sydenham, thanks to a working smoke alarm.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said crews were called to the fire in Chittenup Bend at 12.14am Wednesday, and found the single-storey brick home fully involved with fire.
“The two occupants with their two pet dogs managed to safely self evacuate their burning home due to a working smoke alarm alerting them,” the spokesperson said,
The home was severely damaged by fire, with the roof collapsing.
It took firefighters 25 minutes to bring the blaze under control, with crews working to stop the large fire spreading to a neighbouring property.
The occupants were assessed by Ambulance Victoria paramedics, with police helping the residents with alternative accommodation.
The structure will be assessed by the local council building surveyor, with Fire Rescue Victoria specialist fire investigators to attend the scene Wednesday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
Ten appliances and about 30 firefighters fought the blaze.
