Retail giant Super Retail Group (SRG) will call Melton home as it relocates its Victorian operations to an environmentally sustainable facility at Australia’s largest single-storey warehouse.

SRG — which owns major retailers like Rebel, BCF and Supercheap Auto — will join Metcash and Provincial Home Living at Goodman Group’s $275m, 237,000sq m Riding Boundary Road (RBR) Hub at Truganina.

With works underway, the project is expected to support 850 jobs during construction and flagged for completion in late 2025.

SRG’s new distribution centre will be built to a five-star Green Star rating and replace its two facilities at Altona.

The development will include sustainable design features such as 1.5MW of solar, electric vehicle charging bays and rainwater storage, to support SRG’s sustainability targets as their long-term contract with Goodman’s includes green-leasing provisions.

According to its 2023 Full Year Results, the company expects the new facility to reduce supply chain costs, improve home-delivery and minimise the need for third-party storage.

SRG will spend $80m for their 65,000sq m slice of the site and are expected to incur an $8m increase for duplicated operations during the transition.

Goodman has already moved over one million cubic metres of earthworks and will build more than 4km’s of new roads to assist its tenants.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said demand for industrial land had been significant in recent years and projects in locations such as Ravenhall and Truganina had attracted companies including Amazon, Hellofresh, Myer, Electrolux, Metcash and Elders.

“Melton is one of the leading areas of industrial growth and investment in Victoria. With over 5,000 jobs added over the 2016-2021, and over 315 hectares of industrial zoned land developed since 2007, 42 of those developed in 2021 alone,” Ms Majdlik said.

“Within close proximity to the proposed Western Industrial Freight Terminal (WIFT), there are still a number of employment precincts in Truganina yet to be planned.

“We await formal announcements on the WIFT, the Outer Metropolitan Rail and Road links and the precinct structure planning to identify the future commercial investment opportunities available within the Western State Significant Industrial Precinct.”
SRG was approached for comment.
