It’s been another busy week at Sunshine Magistrates’ Court with a number of hoons — including a couple of brothers — facing their music for their antics
JAMIE JONKER, 22
On July 22 last year, a young western suburbs security guard was clocked by a road safety camera doing twice the speed at Brookfield.
Jamie Jonker pleaded guilty to excess speeding in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
About 6.18pm, Jonker was captured travelling along Black Dog Drive at 104km/h in a 50 zone.
The following week, police attended his Harkness home to question him about the incident to which he replied “no comment”.
In court, the 22-year-old said he received a call that his father, who suffers from a serious health condition, had a fall and needed urgent assistance.
The court heard the father was later transported to hospital via ambulance.
Jonker was fined $500 and disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence for 12 months.
No conviction was recorded.
His brother, Luke Jonker was also in court on Tuesday where pleaded guilty to driving offences after he was intercepted by police following a collision.
About 7.10pm on June 15, Luke was involved in a minor collision at Truganina.
Police on scene asked the 21-year-old to produce identification which revealed that his probationary licence was suspended and he had not displayed P-plates on the car.
Further checks revealed his licence had been suspended since April due to demerit points.
He told police there were no P-plates because he had leant the car to his father.
He was fined $500 but escaped conviction.
Meanwhile, a father who was caught doing almost twice the speed limit told the court he was rushing to his daughter’s aid at a party.
Gunijal Sultan, 51 pleaded guilty to high range speeding
About 8pm on February 21 2019, Sultan was intercepted by police on Green Gully Rd, Kealba after he was seen doing 132km/h in a 70 zone.
In court, he told the Magistrate Michael McNamara he “could not believe” he was going that fast but accepted he was speeding.
On the day of the offence, Sultan was driving to his daughter’s friend’s house after he was told she had jammed her finger in a door and was bleeding.
He told the court the hill was very steep and that he was “unconsciously” speeding.
Mr McNamara said it was “terrifying” that the offending was an unconscious act and that he knew the road well and it was no excuse.
The court heard that Sultan had paid almost $1000 since the offence which included retrieving his Mercedes after it was towed.
He was fined $900 and suspended from driving for a year.
No conviction was recorded.
