A disgruntled man who spent the night stranded on an island by rising flood waters gave locals the bird during the rescue but could not remember how he got there.

Emergency services were called to Bungies Hole, a popular local swimming spot in Werribee, on Wednesday morning after residents heard a man calling for assistance when he was stranded on an island.

Visitors are normally able to walk across to the island but locals said it may have been cut-off due to rising floodwaters in the Werribee River.

An SES spokesman confirmed crews were dispatched about 8.30am to assist but said Victoria Police were the chief agency for the search and rescue.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed the 35-year-old of no fixed address found himself “marooned” on the island overnight.

“Police believe he may have walked across but due to the misadventure, the timings and the man’s recollections they weren’t one hundred per cent sure how exactly the man got over there,” the spokeswoman said.

She said he was checked over by paramedics but was uninjured.

A member of the Werribee Angling Club, situated at Bungies Hole on Riverbend Cr told the Herald Sun swimming was temporarily prohibited about a decade ago due to green algae but it reopened a short time later.

“Signs were put up to stop people from swimming but the council did not bothered to take them down,” the member said.

He said it had remained a popular local swimming spot, particularly for kids.

Images circulated on social media of the man flipping off a resident who took pictures off him lying on the riverbank.

It comes after a Deer Park man was found dead at Altona Beach on Tuesday hours after he disappeared while snorkelling.
