Recycling trailer catches fire at Albion scrap metal plant after internal explosion

An explosion has left a large steel recycling trailer completely ablaze at a scrap metal plant in Melbourne's west.

Firefighters have rushed to a west Melbourne suburb after a recycling trailer caught fire following an internal explosion.

At 11.24am on Monday, triple-0 callers reported seeing a truck engulfed in flames on Ballarat Rd in Albion.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes to find a 12m by 4m steel recycling trailer completely ablaze at a scrap metal plant – understood to be Scrappy’s Metal Recycling.

Wearing breathing apparatuses, crews used aerial equipment to attack the flames from above and remove material from the trailer.

The scene was deemed under control at 11.33am, with firefighters remaining on scene for a further hour to fully extinguish the flames.

One patient was treated by Ambulance Victoria.
