Forklift operator fatally crushed by three-tonnes of feed bags at Cargo Freight Services on Quarry Rd, Tottenham

A forklift driver in his 60s tragically died after three tonnes of animal feed bags crushed him at a freight depot in the city’s west.

UPDATE: FRIDAY 1.52PM: A forklift driver was fatally crushed by three tonnes of animal feed bags at a freight depot in the city’s west on Thursday.

The man in his 60s died at the scene of a Tottenham industrial area after a workplace incident on Quarry Rd.

WorkSafe is continuing to investigate how it unfolded after emergency services were called to Cargo Freight Services about 3.15pm.

A WorkSafe spokesman said it was understood a 63-year-old man was attempting to repair a ripped bag of animal feed when three one-tonne bags stacked on top fell and crushed him abuot 2.30pm.

Cargo Freight Services declined to comment on Thursday afternoon and were approached again on Friday.

The death is Victoria’s 15th confirmed workplace fatality so far in 2024.

There were 27 work-related deaths at the same time last year.

EARLIER: THURSDAY

On Thursday afternoon a police spokesperson confirmed one man has died.

“It’s believed agricultural feed fell on the yet to be formally identified man just after 3pm,” they said.

“WorkSafe have been notified and will be investigating.”

At least four police cars and two WorkSafe officers were seen at the property this afternoon.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said paramedics also responded to the incident at 3.10pm.

Trucks hauling shipping containers were still seen entering and exiting the precinct as other staff left the car park at the end of their shifts.

Half a dozen police officers and WorkSafe investigators entered the office building about 4.45pm.
