Point Cook unit fire: Firefighters respond to Tackle Drive blaze

A man fled to safety after a fire broke out at a double storey Point Cook unit, with firefighters working to stop the flames spreading to nearby properties.

A man fled to safety after a fire erupted at a Point Cook unit.

Fire Rescue Victoria crews arrived at the Tackle Drive address at 2.56am Tuesday to find a fire on the second floor of a double-storey unit.

Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and began suppressing the fire and protecting adjoining properties.

Fire Rescue Victoria said a male occupant had evacuated from the unit and was assessed by Ambulance Victoria.

The fire was brought under control in 25 minutes and FRV crews contained the fire to an upstairs bedroom.

FRV specialist fire investigators will investigate the cause of the fire Tuesday morning.

Fire Rescue Victoria crews also responded to a fire in Newport, after flames and smoke were spotted coming from a building at the corner of Mason St and Melbourne Rd at 12.19am Tuesday.

On-duty PSOs at a train station opposite verified the flames and smoke and FRV crews arrived on scene in two minutes.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the blaze on the second floor of the vacant building.

Victoria Police also attended and closed Melbourne Rd to traffic.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
