Petition organised to install traffic lights at Boundary Rd and Davis Rd in Wyndham Vale’s Mount Cottrel

Angry residents are demanding urgent safety upgrades at a “death trap” intersection in Melbourne’s west where a mother-of-two was killed in a horror crash.

Residents living near the intersection of Boundary Rd and Davis Rd in Wyndham Vale’s Mount Cottrel say the intersection had become a death trap because of a lack of traffic lights and a roundabout.

The intersection — which received a $1m upgrade in 2023 – serves as a key arterial road connecting Melton and Wyndham with both Davis and Boundary roads having speed limits of 80km/h.

In May this year a young mum of two was killed after her motorcycle collided with a truck at the intersection just after 8am.

The rider, a 39-year-old Wyndham Vale woman, was flown to the hospital in a critical condition but died after three days.

The truck driver, a 33-year-old man from Tarneit, was not injured, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing.

Angry residents say authorities have failed to act on repeated warnings about the dangerous crossing.

Michelle Maree said she was “disgusted” a life had been lost at the intersection.

“Every time we hear the sirens go off, we reach for our phones to check on our family and kids to make sure they are okay. We can’t keep living like this,” she said.

Ms Maree said the community had pleaded for safety measures before the unsealed road reopened in 2023.

“We feel like we have been neglected. There has been no foresight in traffic planning and no traffic modelling; as a result, people are paying the price with their lives,” she said.

“There should have been temporary lighting because the reason that woman died was due to the nature of the conditions at that intersection. It makes me angry.”

She said the damaged barricades at the intersection resembled a “demolition derby” after another string of smashes just this week.

“The trouble is, it’s a four-way intersection. There are no line markings and no turning lanes into Boundary Rd, and the volume of traffic is huge,” she said.

Another resident, Shaikh Rahman, said locals were “very scared” to drive through the junction.

“When you are on the road, you can see the marks of the multiple accidents that have happened on the road,” he said.

Mr Rahman said a $1m road sealing upgrade was not enough, and called for traffic lights and roundabouts as the “need of the hour”.

“The truth is that it’s an 80km/h zone and more people are using the road. We need to take action and traffic lights will be the most effective safety measure,” he said

“At the end of the day, we want everyone to go home and not to the hospital because of this death trap junction.”

A petition demanding urgent installation of traffic lights has been launched, branding the intersection “hazardous” and accusing the council of inaction.

Petition organiser Helen Menidis said the woman who died was a “beloved” community member.

“My friend, who was not just a neighbour, but a devoted wife and a dedicated mother of two (lost her life),” she said.

“Her tragic loss has left a void in the lives of her family and friends, and this incident is one among many that highlight the urgent need for immediate action.”

The petition also alleges that despite the dangers, the council has yet to take decisive action to mitigate the risks and prevent further tragedies.

“The implementation of traffic lights at this notorious intersection would serve as a crucial measure to safeguard our community, reduce accidents, and protect lives.”

A Melton Council spokeswoman said upgrades to Boundary Rd and Troups Rd South had increased traffic volumes.

“We have completed a safety audit and implemented interim safety measures, including electronic signage, while we work on further measures, including speed reduction, signage, line marking and rumble strips,” she said.

“Temporary traffic lights will also be installed at the intersection as part of the roadworks. The council is also progressing the installation of a roundabout at the intersection.

“We ask residents when driving in the area to please be vigilant, obey the road rules and drive to the conditions.”

No timeline was given for when the temporary traffic lights will be installed.
