Traffic police were left scratching their heads on Wednesday after a learner driver was allegedly caught with “one of the highest” blood alcohol concentrations on record.
The 23-year-old Truganina man was arrested about 9.45pm on June 29 after he was stopped at a mobile testing site on Fitzgerald Rd in Laverton North.
According to Victoria Police, his test allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.319 BAC, which a spokesman said was “one of the highest on record”.
“His vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days,” he said.
Under Victorian law, learner drivers must have a zero blood alcohol reading.
Road Policing acting superintendent Randy Anderson said police would continue to be “steadfast” in targeting drink drivers.
“Driving a vehicle requires a high degree of attention and vigilance,” he said.
“Be it a booze bus on the roadside or a police car in your rear view mirror – you never know when and where we‘ll be testing to keep all road users safe.”
The driver was later released and is expected to be charged with drink driving, unlicensed driving and other traffic-related offences at a later date.
