A member of the Notorious Prisoner of War gang who tried to firebomb the home of Carl Williams’ ex-wife Roberta is back in jail after he was caught with a loaded firearm.

Rodney Phillips, 34, pleaded guilty to drug possession, a firearm charge and handling goods suspected to be the proceeds of crime in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

A security guard spotted Phillips taking items out of the boot of a car parked in the basement parking space of a St Albans women’s refuge.

He followed as Phillips and another man entered an apartment where he spotted what appeared to be a gun resting on a couch.

He called police, who found Phillips exiting an elevator.

Investigators found a loaded gun tucked into his waistband along with a number of prescription drugs, a knife, jewellery and zip ties fashioned into handcuffs.

He was arrested and taken into custody.

Phillips was jailed for two years and nine months and was fined $400 for this offending.

The court heard Phillips has an extensive criminal history and that he suffered from PTSD from his long stints in prison.

His offending includes a terror campaign against the family of drug boss Carl Williams in July 2015 alongside his mate Sam Liszczak.

The pair, who had been out of jail for a matter of days, tried to firebomb the houses of Williams’ ex-wife Roberta and his father George but got the wrong homes.

Two days later, police officer Ben Ashmole was shot in the head as he and a colleague followed a stolen four-wheel-drive carrying Phillips and Liszczak into a dead-end street in Moonee Ponds.
