The fast-growing western suburbs are set to get another primary school in a bid to help reduce overflowing classrooms across the booming growth corridor.

The state government announced the acquisition of land in Truganina for a new primary, with the temporary name of Tarneit Plains Primary School.

The new school joins four others the state government has stated are in planning stages for Melton: Eynesbury Station, Grasslands, Strathtulloh and Brookfield primary schools, which are set to open this year.

The announcement of the new school in Melton comes after the mayor of neighbouring municipality Wyndham Susan McIntyre called on the government to fast-track more schools to the area.

The Melton LGA has a population of more than 209,000 people and is the second-fastest growing area in the state.

The population is currently forecast to boom to more than 416,000 by the year 2051.

Kororoit state Labor MP Luba Grigorovitch said the new Truganina school was in response to concerns from locals.

“We’ve listened to local families and with today’s announcement of the acquisition of land, we’re a step closer to a new school in the outer west of Melbourne,” Ms Grigorovitch said.

Education Minister Natalie Hutchins said the state government was on track to open 100 new schools across Victoria by 2026.

“This latest land acquisition represents another investment in kids in Melbourne’s west, ensuring local kids and families have access to better schools and resources close to home,” she said.
