Mark Filiti: Alleged conman hands himself in to police

A man who allegedly posed as a delivery driver and took victims’ cash upfront without handing over any items has handed himself in to police.

A man who posed as a delivery driver and allegedly fleeced vulnerable victims in up to 15 suburbs across Melbourne and regional Victoria has handed himself in.

Police confirmed Mark Filiti, 57, was arrested and charged after he self-presented at Sunshine police station following the string of incidents since mid-December, which prompted an appeal in late January.

Leader understands the Burnside Heights man pocketed about $13,700 from at least 17 victims during his spree.

Some of his biggest alleged scams included taking $2500 from a shop on Watton St in Werribee and $2000 from a fish and chip shop on Newcombe St in Portarlington.

Other suburbs where alleged scams took place included St Albans, Sydenham, Flemington, Prahran, Thornbury, Gisborne, Dromana, Pakenham, South Morang, Briar Hill, Macleod, Broadford and Seymour.

During December and January, Mr Filiti allegedly approached businesses and homes and stated that he required cash upfront, and then allegedly took cash from his victims without handing any items over.

Officers charged Mr Filiti with 22 counts of obtaining property by deception and two counts of attempting to obtain property by deception.

He has been remanded to appear at Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on March 20.
