A 22-year-old accused of wielding a machete to jack a car has refused to face court.
Levi Jones was remanded to the Melbourne Magistrates’s Court on Monday but refused to attend and made no application for bail.
A custody officer at Sunshine Police Station told Magistrate Olivia Trumble the accused was “really aggressive” and refused to appear via the video link.
Mr Jones’ lawyer told the court her client was quite distressed in custody, and had been unable to sleep because it was too bright in the rooms with the lights permanently on.
She said her client suffered from ADHD and bipolar disorder and was instructed that he was not currently taking medication.
The matter was adjourned until mid-August.
Police airwing footage captured the moment Mr Jones was arrested after he allegedly threatened a woman and stole her car in Sunshine in the early hours of Monday.
The 22-year-old Echuca man, who is facing a string of assault and driving charges, allegedly could be seen in police helicopter footage trying to escape arrest, running through residential streets in Gisborne.
Police say the man approached the homeless woman while armed with the machete as she took items out of a 2006 Holden HSV Senator on Dickson St about 1am.
He then allegedly threatened her with the weapon before fleeing in her car.
Victoria Police’s Air Wing Unit spotted the car a short time later on Ballarat Rd as the driver made his way to Gisborne, before dumping the car on Frith St and jumping over fences at nearby homes.
In the footage, the man can be seen jumping over the fences, briefly slipping and falling before police arrest him on Beech Crt less than an hour after the ordeal.
He can be seen wearing sneakers, jeans and a cap as he jumps onto the roof of one property.
Police found the machete inside the Holden.
Brimbank Divisional Response Unit detectives charged Mr Jones with aggravated carjacking with an offensive weapon, threat to inflict serious injury, aggravated assault, driving at a dangerous speed and possessing a controlled weapon.
