An Altona North company and its three directors have been charged by environmental authorities after allegedly dumping asbestos contaminated soil.
The Environmental Protection Authority announced on Monday Kyle Road Developments Pty Ltd and its three directors were charged with depositing industrial waste at a site not licensed to accept it.
It’s alleged the company is planning to build high density apartments at a 16 hectare site on 40-68 Kyle Road in Altona North, which forms part of the 67 hectare Altona North Precinct.
Online records indicate the company was registered as a family trust in 2007 and plans to construct more than 600 homes at the site.
An EPA spokesman said the company was charged after allegedly moving and dumping contaminated soil within the Altona North development site.
“The company had earlier planned to remove asbestos contaminated soil for transport to a specially licensed landfill,” he said.
“As the matter is now before the courts, EPA will be making no further comment.”
The Victorian Planning Authority approved plans to redevelop the Altona North Precinct in 2018, transitioning the area from industrial to a residential mixed use neighbourhood.
Plans include 3000 homes with a commitment to 5 per cent affordable housing, commercial office spaces, five new parks and a new town centre on Blackshaws Rd.
Kyle Road Developments Pty Ltd and its directors are expected to face court at a later date.
